Dr Luc Illien

Research Scientist

Luc is an environmental seismologist interested in what seismic waves can tell us about the shallow ground properties and the water hidden beneath our feet. His research has focused particularly on soil moisture and the shallow subsurface, exploring how changes in water content alter seismic properties and what those changes can reveal about how water moves through and is stored in soils.

He has worked extensively with ambient seismic noise to monitor groundwater and environmental change, and is especially interested in bringing seismology and soil science closer together. Inspired by Earth Rover’s mission, Luc is keen to explore how seismic observations can support more sustainable agriculture by revealing how soils respond to rainfall, seasons and land management as part of a dynamic ecosystem.
